Winter is the season when commercial PVC and rubber flooring runs into the most trouble: adhesive fails to cure in cold weather, underfloor heating distorts materials, and de-icing salt gets tracked into lobbies and scratches the surface. Most of these are seasonal issues rather than product defects. Here is a practical guide to avoiding the common winter pitfalls.
PVC sheet and rubber flooring are sensitive to temperature. Most adhesives cure much slower below 15°C, and below 10°C they may never fully set, causing bubbling or de-bonding in spring. Before winter installation, remember three things:
For commercial spaces with underfloor heating (showrooms, studios, yoga rooms, kindergartens), check two specs: thermal conductivity and maximum temperature. Homogeneous PVC and rubber flooring conduct heat well and tolerate stable heating, making them common choices. Heat up and dry the subfloor before installation, and avoid installing while the system is running.
| Material | Thermal behaviour | Winter notes |
|---|---|---|
| Homogeneous PVC | Even conduction, fast response | Control surface temperature; avoid local overheating |
| Rubber flooring | Good conduction, warm feel | Ideal for yoga and gym spaces |
| Foam-backed PVC | Slightly slower conduction, good insulation | Good for corridors and offices |
Municipal de-icing salt is spread on roads in winter, and pedestrians track salt crystals and grit into lobbies. Salt corrodes and wears PVC and rubber surfaces; grit acts like sandpaper underfoot. Protect entrances with two layers: a scraper mat outside and an absorbent mat inside. High-traffic projects may add shoe-cleaning equipment at the door to cut tracked-in dirt.
