Commercial Rubber Flooring Guide

Applications, installation and daily maintenance

Gyms, yoga studios, hospital corridors, school classrooms and elevator lobbies — spaces that demand comfort, slip resistance, quiet footsteps and durability increasingly turn to rubber flooring. Like PVC, rubber flooring belongs to the resilient flooring family, but it differs noticeably: thicker, more elastic, more slip-resistant and more resistant to impact and abrasion. This guide covers where rubber flooring fits, what to look for when buying, how to install it and how to maintain it.

1. Where rubber flooring fits best

Rubber flooring is made from natural or synthetic rubber, which defines its character: high elasticity, high slip resistance, quiet footsteps, impact resistance and tolerance of acids and alkalis. Typical applications include:

  • Fitness and sports: gym equipment areas, yoga studios and dance rooms — shock absorption protects joints, slip resistance prevents falls.
  • Healthcare and rehab: hospital corridors, wards and rehab centres — quiet underfoot, withstands wheelchairs, easy to clean and disinfect.
  • Education and childcare: school classrooms and kindergarten activity areas — soft, impact-friendly, low-odour and safe.
  • Public and office: elevator lobbies, entrances, corridors and showrooms — wear-resistant, stain-resistant, lowers footfall noise.

2. What to look for: thickness, wear resistance and slip resistance

Commercial rubber flooring varies widely in specification. Focus on a few hard metrics:

  • Thickness and weight: commonly 2.0-6.0mm; sports venues usually choose 4mm or above — thicker means better elasticity and impact resistance.
  • Wear rating: check the wear layer and abrasion classification (e.g. T-class ratings); choose high-wear types for heavy-traffic public spaces.
  • Slip resistance: the higher the wet slip-resistance coefficient, the safer — prioritise high slip resistance for bathrooms, entrances and sports areas.
  • Fire and environmental safety: confirm the fire-rating class (B1 or above is preferred) and environmental test reports, especially for education and healthcare.

3. Installation essentials: subfloor and adhesive are the key

Rubber flooring is more demanding than PVC about the subfloor:

  • Subfloor preparation: self-levelling screed, flatness within 2mm/2m, and moisture content within spec before laying.
  • Adhesive: use rubber-flooring-specific adhesive; follow the manufacturer's open time and roller pressure to avoid hollow spots.
  • Seaming and environment: heat-weld joints then trim smooth; install at 15°C or above with moderate humidity.
  • Heavy areas: add buffer pads under large equipment to spread long-term pressure.

4. Daily care: neutral cleaners, avoid strong acids and alkalis

  • Cleaning: use neutral cleaners with a semi-dry mop or scrubber-dryer; avoid strong acids, alkalis and steel-wool scouring.
  • Protection: install dust-catching mats at entrances to reduce grit; avoid dragging heavy or sharp items across the floor.
  • Maintenance: schedule no-polish maintenance or sealing treatments to keep gloss and extend life; treat local stains promptly to prevent discolouration.
