Underfloor heating is becoming standard in homes and offices. But it demands far more from flooring than normal conditions: heat must conduct, materials must resist temperature, and dimensions must stay stable. Choose wrong and you will feel it underfoot at best, or see buckling and deformation at worst.
1. Three Requirements Flooring Must Meet for Heated Floors
- Thermal conductivity: low thermal resistance so heat transfers quickly to the surface;
- Heat resistance: long-term tolerance of surface temperatures around 55°C without aging or deforming;
- Dimensional stability: no warping or buckling through repeated heating and cooling cycles.
2. Which Materials Suit Heated Floors
- SPC stone-plastic flooring: the stone powder core conducts heat well, is dimensionally stable and heat-resistant, making it a cost-effective choice for heated floors;
- Composite PVC flooring: confirm the product's heat-resistance parameters and use with an appropriate underlay;
- Heating-grade wood flooring (multi-layer engineered wood): natural underfoot but more expensive; choose products explicitly marked as suitable for underfloor heating;
- Ceramic tiles and stone: excellent thermal conductivity but cold and hard underfoot, best used with temperature control.
3. Installation Notes: Expansion Gaps and Moisture Content
Three things should not be ignored when laying flooring over underfloor heating: first, reserve expansion gaps of 8-10mm around the walls to prevent buckling from heat expansion; second, the base moisture content must meet the standard (below 2%), as moisture is the number one cause of buckling; third, raise the temperature slowly at first start-up (about 5°C per day) so the material adapts gradually.
