Flooring Construction FAQ: How to Avoid Buckling, Curling Edges and Joint Cracking

Published on 2026-08-14 · Suzhou Industrial Park Gulin Commerce Co., Ltd.

Many customers' first reaction to floor buckling and curling edges is bad material. In fact, the vast majority of floor problems occur during construction: the base was not handled well, temperature and humidity were not controlled, and details were missed.

1. Common Causes of Buckling

  • Moisture in the base: excessive base moisture content is the number one cause of buckling (standard below 2%);
  • Adhesive problems: uneven glue application, mismatched adhesive or insufficient open time;
  • Temperature and humidity: excessive changes in construction or usage environment;
  • No expansion gaps: large areas laid without reserved expansion space.

2. Curling Edges and Joint Cracking

Curling edges are mostly related to an uneven base, weak adhesion or edge moisture; joint cracking is commonly caused by insufficient welding temperature, mismatched welding rod and sheet material, or base settlement putting stress on joints. Choosing an experienced crew and controlling the welding process can prevent most problems.

3. How to Avoid Problems at the Source

  • Base treatment: level (2m straightedge deviation no more than 3mm), dry (moisture content below 2%) and clean;
  • Environment control: construction temperature 15-30°C, humidity 40%-70%, materials on site 24 hours in advance to acclimatize;
  • Standard construction: apply and open glue per instructions, reserve expansion gaps, and use matching welding rods;
  • Acceptance control: avoid heavy loads and large amounts of water within 72 hours after installation.
